On Friday, Governor Brewer signed a bill banning Arizona agencies from using public money to fund any organization that provides abortion services.
In a public statement, Brewer said, “this is a common-sense law that tightens existing state regulations and closes loopholes in order to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortions, whether directly or indirectly. By signing this measure into law, I stand with the majority of Americans who oppose the use of taxpayer funds for abortion.”
Opponents of the bill claim that it represents an attack on Planned Parenthood and low-income women.
The bill comes in the wake of the signing of Arizona’s HB 2800 which bans abortions that occur any time after a fetus has reached 20 weeks.
